FLYING: Texting and ATC Are Compatible?

Friday, July 1, 2016 @ 8:00 AM

While most pilots understand the inherent dangers of operating a motor vehicle — airplane included — while attempting to fire off a quick text message, the FAA says text-based ATC, also known as controller-pilot datalink communications (CPDLC), is the wave of the future and is taking hold at airports around the United States. The agency expects CPDLC to be installed and operating at all California airports next month.

The system, now operable on most airliners and many business jets, allows text-based messages to replace dozens of repetitive verbal ATC instructions normally passed via VHF radio. The system also saves valuable radio airtime by eliminating regular pilot requests to repeat instructions because messages display directly on a small cockpit screen. CPDLC messages aren’t subject to interference by other pilots' radio calls either.

FAA Announces ADS-B Rebate Program

Monday, June 13, 2016 @ 8:00 AM

In an effort to spur adoption of ADS-B avionics ahead of the 2020 equipment mandate, the FAA announced a rebate program for owners of U.S.-registered piston airplanes — but as you might guess, there’s a catch.

Once the incentive program goes into effect in September, the first 20,000 aircraft owners to equip with ADS-B Out avionics will receive the cash incentive worth $500. It must be for new ADS-B avionics and not software updates or ADS-B gear in new airplanes. The program will run for one year or until the FAA distributes the 20,000 rebates.

iFlightPlanner Introduces Garmin GTN Flight Plan Compatibility

Monday, April 27, 2015 @ 8:00 AM

iFlightPlanner recently announced the availability of new functionality that allows pilots to create and save flight plan files for use in the new GTN 600 and 700-series avionics by Garmin.

This innovative technology eliminates the need for pilots to manually enter complex routes.  Instead, pilots can simply save a GFP file from iFlightPlanner.com to a compatible SD Card, then follow the step-by-step instructions found in the Garmin Pilot’s Guide for their particular unit to activate or store the route files.

“iFlightPlanner is very excited to be the first flight planning resource offering file export capabilities for use in the Garmin GTN series of avionics,” said Andy Matthews, iFlightPlanner’s Co-Founder & Director of Business Development.  “Safety, usability and flight planning efficiency are at the core of every new feature we develop and we believe our membership will find this technology to be an incredible asset to their flying.”

iFlightPlanner has been a leader in flight plan file creation since it first introduced this type of functionality for its members in 2012, with GFP compatibility building on iFlightPlanner’s existing FPL flight plan file creation for Garmin’s G1000 and 430/530 avionics packages.  Collectively iFlightPlanner now supports five (5) different file formats – Garmin GFP and FPL, GPX, GPX for AvMap and the FMS flight plan file format used in the popular X-Plane Flight Simulator by Laminar Research.

The GFP format is compatible with the GTN 625, 635, 650, 725 and 750 models running software version 5.10 or later and requires an iFlightPlanner Premium or Premium Plus membership.  It should also be noted that the GFP must be saved to a folder named “FPL” on the root of the SD Card as that is where the GTN models will look for the files.

iFlightPlanner Premium memberships with route export capabilities start at just $9.99/month and include access to iFlightPlanner’s cloud-based flight planning technology across all of its platforms, including iFlightPlanner for iPad.  iFlightPlanner Free memberships are available with no obligation and allow pilots to leverage much of iFlightPlanner’s web-based technology with limited, read-only functionality on the iPad.  A one-time, 30-day free trial to iFlightPlanner Premium is available via the App Store.

The iFlightPlanner Crew will be in Lakeland, FL at SUN ‘n FUN from April 21–26 in Booths D-011 and D-012. Pilots are encouraged to stop by for their personal demonstration or visit http://www.iFlightPlanner.com for more information.

iOS 8.3 GPS Accessory Bug

Wednesday, April 15, 2015 @ 8:00 AM

There is a nasty bug in iOS 8.3 which blocks position information coming from Bluetooth GPS devices.  The symptom is that your GPS looks like it is working, but your apps do not show your location - not all apps are affected, but most are.

The problem affects the XGPS150, XGPS160 and XGPS170 from Dual as well as Bluetooth GPS devices from other manufacturers such as Bad Elf and Garmin.  Greg Lukins, Vice President of Business Development at Dual Electronics said, "We have contacted Apple, filed a bug report and they are aware of the issue.  Unfortunately we do not have a timeline for a fix but they are treating it as a priority."

In the meantime, some users are getting around the bug by turning off Location Services, rebooting the iOS device, and turning Location Services back on.  "It's not a surefire workaround and it's not working for everybody," added Lukins.  "For those who have yet to install the iOS 8.3 update it is recommended that you wait until Apple releases an updated version of the iOS."

AEA challenges FAA on NextGen GA Fund Implementation

Wednesday, October 29, 2014 @ 8:00 AM

Mike Whitaker, FAA deputy administrator, called the summit together in Washington, D.C., to discuss how the FAA and industry can work together to resolve barriers and address potential challenges to meeting the mandate to equip thousands of aircraft with automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast-out avionics in the next five years.

"We are not here to rewrite the rule; rather, we are here to discuss any barriers we have in meeting the mandate," Whitaker said in his opening remarks to begin the summit. "The mandate is not changing."

During the summit's morning work session, Paula Derks, Aircraft Electronics Association president, shared with the audience that the repair station industry is ready, willing and able to meet the ADS-B Out mandate, as the shops are trained and prepared for the New Year's Day 2020 deadline.

Huerta Stresses Weather at Safety Summit

Friday, January 31, 2014 @ 8:00 AM

By Russ Niles, AVweb

FAA Administrator Michael Huerta met with GA leaders on Monday and urged them to tell their members to avoid weather traps in the coming flying season. Huerta told the leaders at the General Aviation Safety Summit that the GA accident rate has flattened over the last six years and last year there were 259 fatal accidents that killed 449 people. He said "a top priority" with the agency is to reduce those numbers and he asked for help from the leaders. "...I met with general aviation leaders to jump start our efforts for this year’s flying season and we agreed to work together to raise awareness to prevent weather related accidents for the upcoming flying season," he said in a statement.

AEA Partners with NextGen GA Fund to Help Owners Finance NextGen Installs

Friday, January 17, 2014 @ 8:00 AM

The Aircraft Electronics Association recently announced a partnership agreement with the NextGen GA Fund to accelerate the rollout of NextGen by providing access to quick, affordable financial incentives to aid aircraft owners.

The NextGen GA Fund will finance NextGen installations, using stipulated equipage families to include WAAS-capable GPS, ADS-B In, ADS-B Out, RNAV/RNP avionics, data communications, SWIM, flat-panel displays, antennas, electronic components, instrument panel modifications, and installation and certification costs.

The NextGen GA Fund is a public-private partnership formed between the U.S. Congress, the aerospace industry and the private-sector investment community. Congress approved of this program by granting federal loan guarantees found in Section 221 of the Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization Act of 2012. The NextGen GA Fund will initially bring approximately $550 million as a capital base, eventually supporting some $1.3 billion in recurring financings to the general aviation sector during the next 10 years. The NextGen GA Fund will enable the retrofit of tens of thousands of general aviation aircraft.
